Hotlinking Prevention

hotlinking iswhen someone else links to a page or image on your site and serves the info to their web visitors, ideally you want to prevent this from happening as it uses your bandwidth.

To prevent hotlinking copy and paste the following code into notepad.

[START CODE]
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?mydomain.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule \.(gif|jpg|png|pdf|js|css)$ - [F]
[END CODE]

Replace mydomain.com with your own domainname. Save the file a .htaccess (that is dot htaccess).

Now FTP the htaccess file to the root of your webspace (root is the same place as index.html)

Go to your control panel, Error Pages icon, click the little green arrow, for Error Document Code choose 403, Message or URL type in "Danger Hotlinking" then for Type click Message.

Now anytime someone tries to hotlink your stuff they will get a webpage appear with the message "Danger Hotlinking" and your images/pdf etc will be protected.
